Please Join the Hingham Land Conservation Trust for our Spring Walk on Sunday at 1:00 PM, May 18, 2014. This large state park within Hingham’s midst contains 3,526 acres of fields, forests, meadows and ponds. On this walk we will explore some of the historic features of the park. The Indian chief Josiah Wompatuck deeded the land to the colonists in 1655. During the 1800s, the local residents maintained woodlots to heat their homes and the farmers used the fields to graze their horses, sheep, and oxen. After the Civil War the land reverted to forest. In 1941, the U.S. Navy acquired this property to expand the existing Hingham Naval Ammunitions Depot. Concrete bunkers were constructed and the area became an important ammunition storage depot during World War II.
Our guide will be Stephen Gammon, a lifelong resident of Scituate, and a Wompatuck State Park employee since 1974. He knows the park, incredibly well as he has performed every job position in the park except clerk. Our walking group will gather at the front door to the park visitor center which has adjacent parking. The hour and a quarter walk will occur rain or shine.
