WHERE: An opening program at New North Church, 1 Lincoln Street, setting the stage for our walk to Burns Memorial Park (location of the originalTranquility Grove) for a short ceremony. Post-walk refreshment stop and goody-bags at the Hingham Community Center.
175 years ago, Tranquility Grove in Hingham was the site of the historic “Great Abolitionist Picnic.” Frederick Douglass and others prominent in the fight to end slavery spoke. As many as 10,000 attended.
